So the other night, we were trying to figure out what to eat for dinner. I really really wanted to go out to a restaurant with a waiter and the whole shebang. I didn't want our usual of going to get food from a place like Rumbi and taking it home.
Now....we are the worst at deciding where to eat. We both want to put the other persons opinion first, which you can see how that can cause a problem. With that being said, it took us a couple hours to figure out what to eat. Finally, Travis decided we were going to have Italian and I wasn't allowed to know. I am not good with surprises. I stress out and think way to into it. I need to be in the know at all times! Haha
We got ready and headed out! He didn't know where to go, so I had to map quest it. I always know how to get around secrets Hehe.
We were going to a little place next to The Leonardo downtown called Canellas.
Canellas was established in 1978 by Joe and Missy Canella. They created this restaurant to share the meals Joe loved as a kid ,at an affordable price, with the people of Salt Lake.
In 2007, they added a bar and lounge into the restaurant to bring together the nightlife bar scene with the warmth and comfort of a family owned business.
Now, Downtown you have to pay for parking from 8 AM - 8 PM. Luckily we parked 2-3 minutes before the free period of the night and just sat in the car until 8 so it would be free.
As we walked up to the door, we noticed it was very dead, but realized it was a Monday night, so that should be expected. As you walk in, it is dim and has a romantic feel to it with candle lit tables. The nice thing is that it is more of a cozy, comfortable environment rather than an expensive fancy one you would expect at most Italian restaurants.
The walls were covered in amazing pictures ranging from Frank Sinatra to old New York to even old photos of Italian families.
The wine menu looked great and the waitress helped me pick out a good wine. I went with the Sauvion Vouvray which is from Loire Valley, France. Description below :)
The nose features floral and ripe fruit notes (citrus, quince),
the palate, the wine is off-dry and medium bodied with food-
friendly acidity. The finish is dry with lingering notes of honey
and dried fruit"
For our appetizer, we decided to get the Bruschetta. Bruschetta is a toasted baguette topped with marinated tomatoes, roasted garlic, goat cheese and a balsamic reduction. It was the best Bruschetta we have ever had! The goat cheese was probably my favorite part of it.
Our meals came with the choice of a soup or salad. So naturally I got the salad with blue cheese dressing. To my surprise, she informed me that their blue cheese is specially mixed with Italian dressing.
I thought Why the hell not! That sounds interesting. It was the best dressing ever! Travis hates blue cheese but I had him try it & he actually liked it! I'm thinking I might try to make my own one day.
Another thing I liked about the salad was the fact that they had chick peas and kidney beans in it. Reminded me of my mom's homemade taco salad.
On to the entrees! I ordered a 3 Cheese Tortellini with Alfredo. I liked that they actually had options for the sauce, such as Pesto, Alfredo, Marinara, Vodka Cream, Arrabiata, Pomodoro, and Scampi. What a selection huh?! They also gave you an option of adding a protein for $3-4 such as chicken, sausage, meatball or shrimp. I added chicken to mine and the entire thing was delicious! Travis decided to get the Chicken Parmigiana on top of a bed of spaghetti. That was pretty great too!
I felt like the serving size of everything was just right. It wasn't overwhelming and very satisfying.
Another thing we liked was that the music selection wasn't typical italian music restaurant music. They were playing music like The Fugees. So it was a nice cozy, romantic setting with a edgy feel.
If you are ever thinking of going to Olive Garden (though it is good), please consider giving this place a try at least once. You will not be disappointed. Awesome food, great environment & supporting the local scene for the same price as a busy chain such as Olive Garden. Check out their website and menu here!
After dinner, I mentioned that I kept smelling cinnamon....which led us to think of Cinnabon cinnamon rolls, AKA THE BEST CINNAMON ROLL EVER! How could you deny this heavenly Ooey Gooeyness?!
Growing up in Vegas, Cinnabon was a big part of my childhood. It was Christmas morning breakfast and just awesomeness all the time. It was even my brothers birthday cake one year. When we moved to Salt Lake....there was no Cinnabon. So basically part of my childhood was taken away from me, you could say...
As of late the only place you could possibly get them was in the airport terminals. But even that one closed. Then we discovered that somewhere in Utah had them because a Jamba Juice stand at a concert was selling them. So, of course, I did some research and found that a Maverick gas station in North Salt Lake sold Cinnabon! That's only a 20 minute freeway drive from us!
We haven't tried going out there yet...until last night...when my cinnamon senses tingled! I made Travis realize we were right next to the freeway and only like 15 minutes away. So...WE WERE OFF! Random adventure to get Cinnabon! When we pulled up, I saw the Cinnabon signs and freaked out! Before Travis even turned the car off, I had already opened the door and hopped out, leaving him in my dust! When we got in there, we discovered that they not only sold Cinnabon but they had a whole little Cinnabon store inside of this Maverick. I was like a kid in the candy store. I basically kept pacing back and forth saying, "I don't even know what to do!" for a good 15 minutes. At one point, I even asked him if I was glowing. Haha. Nerd status and proud of it! The whole way home I was sooooo happy! It was great. We felt like we were smuggling drugs across county lines because these things are THAT GOOD! I even bought one for my brother.
If you are interested in knowing where it is....I'll tell you...but I gotta kill ya before I tell you. Just kidding! Its located at the Maverick in North Salt Lake. here is the address.
880 W Center St, North Salt Lake, UT 84054
GO GET ONE!
